What is the SSC MTS exam?

The SSC MTS exam, officially the Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff and Havaldar (CBIC & CBN) Examination, is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) every year. It is one of the most popular central government exams for candidates who have passed Class 10.

Through this exam, SSC recruits Multi-Tasking Staff for ministries, departments and offices of the Government of India, and Havaldars for the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN). Both are General Central Service Group 'C', Non-Gazetted, Non-Ministerial posts in Pay Level-1 of the 7th Pay Commission.

The selection is based on a single Computer Based Examination (CBE) held in two sessions on the same day. Havaldar candidates must also clear a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST).

Notification status: SSC's tentative calendar for 2026-27 listed the MTS & Havaldar Examination, 2026 with the advertisement in June 2026 and the exam in September–November 2026, but the official 2026 notice has not been released yet. Dates and vacancies for 2026 are to be notified. The pattern, eligibility and syllabus below are taken from the latest official notice (MTS & Havaldar Examination, 2025, dated 26 June 2025).

How are candidates selected after SSC MTS?

How candidates are shortlisted and admitted after the SSC MTS results.

The selection process differs slightly for the two posts.

Stage 1: Computer Based Examination

All candidates take the CBE (Session-I and Session-II). Candidates must reach the minimum qualifying marks in both sessions. For MTS, SSC fixes separate category-wise and state/UT-wise cut-offs in Session-II, and may fix separate cut-offs for the two age groups (18–25 and 18–27 years).

Stage 2: PET / PST (Havaldar only)

For Havaldar, candidates are shortlisted in the ratio of 1:7 (vacancies : candidates) on the basis of Session-II scores and called for PET/PST. A candidate who fails PET/PST is not considered for Havaldar, but remains in the race for MTS as per merit.

Stage 3: Document Verification and Final Merit

Final selection and allocation of post-cum-State/UT/CCA is based on normalised Session-II scores, the preferences given in the online application form and the candidate's age group. Ties are resolved by Session-II General Awareness marks, then total Session-I marks, then date of birth (older first), then alphabetical order of names, as applied in the 2025 result.
