Timed diagnostic

Before you take the assessment

This is a single timed sitting whose job is to produce an honest baseline. It is worth nothing if it is taken in pieces, so read these first.

  • It runs in full screen. The test takes over the screen when it starts, the way the real computer-based test does.
  • Leaving it is counted. Switching away is recorded and warned about; the third time, the paper is submitted for you.
  • The clock runs for 30 minutes. Set aside that long, uninterrupted. It starts when you begin, keeps running if you close the tab, and submits the paper at zero.
  • 3 timed sections. Each section has its own limit, and a section you have finished cannot be returned to.

About this test

About the ACT Assessment Test

The ACT Assessment Test is a free practice test for the enhanced ACT. It has 30 multiple-choice questions to solve in 30 minutes at medium difficulty. Each correct answer earns +1 mark and there is no negative marking. The questions are pitched at a typical real-paper level, and each one has 4 options. The language of the test is English. Please note that the real ACT gives a scaled score, while this Aptitude360 test uses simple marks so you can track your accuracy.

Test pattern and marking

  • English: 10 questions, 8 minutes, +1 for a correct answer, no negative marking
  • Mathematics: 10 questions, 12 minutes, +1 for a correct answer, no negative marking
  • Reading: 10 questions, 10 minutes, +1 for a correct answer, no negative marking

Each section has its own timer, and the section times add up to 30 minutes.

Topics covered

The English section tests error spotting and sentence improvement. The Mathematics section covers algebra, quadratic equations, geometry, trigonometry, probability, surds and indices, ratio and proportion, and linear equations. The Reading section is made up entirely of reading comprehension questions.

Every question shows its question type in square brackets at the top, for example [Reading Comprehension], [English passage (editing)], [Linear Equations] and [Ratio & Proportion], so you can see which part of the real exam pattern each question follows.

Key formulas to revise

  • Quadratic formula for \( ax^{2}+bx+c=0 \), where a is not zero: \( x=\dfrac{-b\pm\sqrt{b^{2}-4ac}}{2a} \)
  • Pythagoras theorem, where c is the hypotenuse: \( a^{2}+b^{2}=c^{2} \)
  • Trigonometric identity: \( \sin^{2}\theta+\cos^{2}\theta=1 \)
  • Probability with equally likely outcomes: \( P(E)=\dfrac{\text{favourable}}{\text{total}} \)
  • Law of indices: \( a^{m}\times a^{n}=a^{m+n} \)
  • Product of surds, for non-negative a and b: \( \sqrt{a}\times\sqrt{b}=\sqrt{ab} \)

Who should take this test

This test suits students preparing for the enhanced ACT who want a quick, timed check of their English, Mathematics and Reading skills. It also helps anyone who wants to practise working against section-wise time limits at a medium difficulty level.

How to use the solutions

Every question in this test has the correct answer and a short worked solution. After you submit, go through the solutions for this test section by section. Note the topics where you lost marks, then revise those topics on Aptitude360 before your next attempt.
