Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 25-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 25 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Sound and Waves GK Practice Quiz Level 1: Pitch, Echo and SONAR

This Level 1 Sound and Waves GK quiz tests how sound is produced, how it travels as a longitudinal wave and how pitch and loudness differ. It also covers infrasound, ultrasound, echo, reverberation and SONAR. Aptitude360 provides a written solution for every question, so each basic idea can be checked as you practise.

What this Sound and Waves Level 1 quiz covers

  • Vibrating objects as the source of sound, and compressions and rarefactions in air
  • Why sound needs a medium and cannot pass through a vacuum
  • Loudness linked to amplitude and pitch linked to frequency, with the hertz as the unit
  • Speed of sound in solids, liquids and gases, and the effect of temperature
  • Human hearing range, animals that use infrasound, and ultrasound used by bats and porpoises
  • Echo, persistence of hearing, reverberation in large halls and the full form and uses of SONAR

Key sound concepts for GK revision

  • Difference between longitudinal and transverse waves
  • Order of sound types from lowest to highest frequency
  • Medical uses of ultrasound, such as imaging organs and breaking kidney stones
  • Sound-absorbing materials used to control reverberation

Tips to revise sound basics

  • Pair each property with its cause: amplitude for loudness, frequency for pitch
  • Keep a short list of animals sorted by whether they use infrasound or ultrasound
  • Remember that the minimum echo distance depends on the speed of sound, so it changes with temperature

Who this sound quiz suits

It is a starting set for General Awareness learners revising school-level physics before moving to the harder levels of the series.

FAQs about Sound and Waves – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 1

Is sound a longitudinal or transverse wave?
In air, sound is a longitudinal wave. The particles of the medium vibrate back and forth along the direction in which the sound travels, forming compressions and rarefactions.
Why can sound not travel through a vacuum?
Sound needs a medium of particles to carry its vibrations. A vacuum has no such particles, so sound cannot pass through it, unlike light.
What is the difference between pitch and loudness?
Pitch depends on the frequency of a sound, so a higher frequency gives a higher pitch. Loudness depends on the amplitude of the vibration.
What is the full form of SONAR?
SONAR stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging. It uses ultrasonic waves to find the distance, direction and speed of objects under water.
