Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 25-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 25 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Modern Physics GK Quiz Level 1: Atoms, Radioactivity and Devices

This is Level 1 of the Modern Physics and Everyday Devices GK quiz on Aptitude360, a basics set that mixes atomic structure, radioactivity, nuclear energy and semiconductors. It asks who discovered the electron, nucleus and neutron, what alpha, beta and gamma decay give out, and how solar cells, LEDs and rectifiers work. Each question comes with a written explanation.

What this modern physics basics set covers

  • Discovery of the electron by J. J. Thomson, the nucleus by Rutherford and the neutron by Chadwick
  • Bohr's explanation of the hydrogen spectrum
  • Einstein's explanation of the photoelectric effect, light as photons and his Nobel Prize
  • Becquerel's discovery of radioactivity, alpha, beta and gamma decay, and half-life
  • Nuclear fission, fusion and controlled versus uncontrolled chain reactions
  • Semiconductors, p-type and n-type doping, the p-n junction, and devices like solar cells, LEDs, photocells and rectifiers

Key concepts to revise in modern physics GK

  • Scientist and discovery pairs in atomic physics
  • What each type of radioactive decay emits
  • Fission splits a heavy nucleus while fusion joins light nuclei
  • Trivalent impurities such as boron give p-type, pentavalent impurities give n-type semiconductors
  • Energy conversion in everyday devices, such as light to electricity in a solar cell

How to prepare for atomic and nuclear physics questions

  • Make a single table of scientists, discoveries and the element or experiment involved
  • Remember devices by their energy conversion, input on one side and output on the other
  • Revise charges of the electron, proton and neutron together with where each is found in the atom

Who this Level 1 quiz is for

General Awareness aspirants starting modern physics who want to check basic facts before moving to the harder levels of this series.

FAQs about Modern Physics and Everyday Devices – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 1

What is the photoelectric effect?
It is the emission of electrons from a metal surface when light of suitable frequency falls on it. Einstein explained it by treating light as small packets of energy called photons.
What is the difference between nuclear fission and fusion?
In fission a heavy nucleus splits into lighter nuclei and releases energy. In fusion light nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, also releasing energy.
What is the difference between p-type and n-type semiconductors?
A p-type semiconductor is made by adding a trivalent impurity such as boron, so holes are the majority carriers. An n-type semiconductor is made by adding a pentavalent impurity, so electrons are the majority carriers.
What is the half-life of a radioactive substance?
Half-life is the time in which half of the radioactive nuclei in a sample decay. It is a fixed property of each radioactive isotope.

Marking & rules

Total marks
50 across 50 questions.
Negative marking
A wrong answer costs marks. Leaving a question unanswered costs nothing.
Attempts
100 in total. An attempt is spent the moment you begin one.

What you get when you submit

The analysis is ready the moment you submit the paper.

Score and accuracy

Marks, percentage, right, wrong and skipped, and the time you took.

Section by section

The same figures for each section, so a weak one cannot hide in an average.

The full answer key

Every question with your answer, the right one, the working, and the video where there is one.

Where you stand

Your score against the spread of everyone else who has sat this test.
