Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 25-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 25 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Interior of the Earth and Rocks GK Practice Quiz for Beginners, Level 1

Beginners starting geography for general awareness can use this Level 1 quiz to learn the Earth's internal structure and the three main types of rocks. It covers the crust, mantle and core, earthquake waves, and how rocks form and change. Aptitude360 gives an explanation for every answer.

Topics covered in this Interior of the Earth quiz

  • Crust, mantle and core, their depth and share of the Earth's volume
  • Sial of the continents, Sima of the ocean floor and Nife of the core
  • P-waves and S-waves, and the shadow zone where waves are not recorded
  • Kola deep drilling and the deepest mine in the world
  • Igneous rocks: intrusive and extrusive, granite and Deccan basalt
  • Sedimentary and metamorphic rocks such as sandstone, slate and marble, and the rock cycle
  • Rocks used in monuments like the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort

Basic concepts to revise on Earth's layers and rocks

  • Which layer is thinnest and which is largest by volume
  • Why S-waves cannot pass through liquids
  • Fast cooling gives fine grains; slow cooling gives large grains
  • Pairs of original rock and the metamorphic rock it becomes

Revision tips for rocks and the Earth's interior

  • Expand the short names: Sial for silica and alumina, Sima for silica and magnesium, Nife for nickel and iron
  • Make a two-column list of original rocks and their metamorphic forms, such as clay to slate and limestone to marble

Who should take this Level 1 quiz

School students and exam aspirants at the start of geography preparation who want to build the basics before moving to harder levels.

FAQs about Interior of the Earth and Rocks – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 1

What is the interior of the Earth made of?
The Earth has three main layers: the crust on the outside, the mantle below it and the core at the centre. The core is made mainly of nickel and iron, which is why it is called Nife.
Which is the thinnest layer of the Earth?
The crust is the thinnest layer of the Earth. It is thinner under the oceans and thicker under the continents.
What are the three types of rocks?
The three types are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Igneous rocks form from cooled magma or lava, sedimentary rocks from pressed layers of sediments, and metamorphic rocks from other rocks changed by heat and pressure.
How do scientists know about the interior of the Earth?
Scientists study how earthquake waves such as P-waves and S-waves travel through the Earth. Since S-waves cannot pass through liquids, their behaviour shows that part of the core is liquid.
