Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 30-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 30 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Universe and Solar System GK Practice Quiz Level 2: Planets, Moon, Stars

This quiz tests the Big Bang and Hubble's evidence for an expanding universe, the light year, the order and types of planets, the Moon and the night sky. It is Level 2 of the Universe and Solar System series on Aptitude360, under General Awareness and Geography. The questions mix direct recall with statement analysis, odd-one-out and chronology formats.

Topics in this solar system GK set

  • Origin of the universe: the Big Bang, also called the expanding universe hypothesis
  • Light year as a unit of distance and the time sunlight takes to reach Earth
  • Terrestrial and Jovian planets, the order of planets and the memory trick used to remember it
  • Pluto's reclassification as a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union
  • Earth as a Geoid and as the blue planet, the conditions that support life, and Venus as Earth's twin
  • The Moon, meteoroids, the asteroid belt, the Milky Way, and the Saptarishi pointing to the Pole Star

Key astronomy concepts to revise

  • The difference between a star, a planet, a satellite and a constellation
  • Why the Moon looks large in the sky even though it is much smaller than Earth
  • Approximate distances from Earth to the Sun and to the Moon
  • The origin of the word planet, from the Greek word for wanderers

Revision tips for universe and solar system questions

  • Learn the planets in order and tag each one as inner or outer to answer neighbour questions quickly
  • Keep a short list of approximate distances and the speed of light for matching questions
  • Read every statement carefully, because the light year is often wrongly described as a unit of time

Who should practise this Level 2 quiz

It suits General Awareness learners who know the basics of geography and want firmer recall of astronomy facts at an intermediate level.

FAQs about Universe and Solar System – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 2

Why is Venus called Earth's twin?
Venus is called Earth's twin because the two planets are very similar in size and mass. Venus also comes closer to Earth than any other planet.
What is a light year?
A light year is a unit of distance, not time. It is the distance that light travels in one year, moving at about three lakh kilometres per second.
Why is Pluto not a planet anymore?
In August 2006, the International Astronomical Union decided to call Pluto a dwarf planet. Pluto orbits the Sun and is nearly round, but it has not cleared its orbital path of other objects.
What are Jovian planets?
The Jovian planets are the four outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They are much larger than the rocky terrestrial planets. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants, while Uranus and Neptune are ice giants.
