Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 75-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 75 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

x Plus 1 Over x Identities Level 3 Practice Quiz: Higher Powers and Surds

Built for quant learners who have mastered the basic reciprocal identities, this Level 3 practice quiz on Aptitude360 covers harder x plus 1 over x type questions. It takes sums and differences of x and its reciprocal to higher powers. It also uses surd values of x, quadratic conditions, cube roots of unity and the special case of a sum equal to minus two.

Topics covered in this x plus 1 over x Level 3 set

  • Higher powers of x plus its reciprocal found from a given sum
  • Differences such as x minus its reciprocal and their higher odd and even powers
  • Turning a quadratic condition into a reciprocal sum by dividing through by x
  • Surd values of x whose reciprocal is the conjugate surd
  • Working backwards from a fourth power to recover the original sum or difference
  • Special cases such as cube roots of unity and sums equal to two or minus two

Key formulas and rules for reciprocal identity questions

  • Let \( t=x+\dfrac{1}{x} \) and \( d=x-\dfrac{1}{x} \)
  • Square: \( x^{2}+\dfrac{1}{x^{2}}=t^{2}-2 \)
  • Cube: \( x^{3}+\dfrac{1}{x^{3}}=t^{3}-3t \)
  • Link: \( t^{2}-d^{2}=4 \)
  • Difference of squares: \( x^{2}-\dfrac{1}{x^{2}}=t\times d \)
  • With \( a_{n}=x^{n}+\dfrac{1}{x^{n}} \): \( a_{5}=a_{2}a_{3}-a_{1} \)

Revision tips for harder reciprocal problems

  • When x is a surd, rationalise to find its reciprocal; it is often the conjugate, which makes the sum a whole number.
  • For a quadratic condition, divide every term by x to read off the reciprocal sum directly.
  • Use the given sign condition on x before taking a square root while working backwards.
  • If the sum equals two, x is one; if it equals minus two, x is minus one, so very large powers become simple.

Who should practise this level

Students preparing the algebra part of quantitative aptitude who have finished the earlier levels of this topic and want advanced reciprocal identity practice.

FAQs about x + 1/x Type Questions Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 3

How to find x square plus 1 by x square from x plus 1 by x?
Square the given sum and subtract two. For example, if x plus 1 by x equals three, then x square plus 1 by x square equals nine minus two, which is seven.
How to find x cube plus 1 by x cube if x plus 1 by x is given?
Cube the given sum and subtract three times the sum. If the sum is three, the answer is twenty-seven minus nine, which is eighteen.
What is the value of x if x plus 1 by x equals 2?
Multiplying by x gives x square minus two x plus one equal to zero, which is the square of x minus one. So x equals one, and every power of x plus its reciprocal equals two.
How to convert a quadratic like x square minus 6x plus 1 equals 0 into x plus 1 by x form?
Divide every term by x, which is allowed because x cannot be zero here. This gives x minus six plus 1 by x equal to zero, so x plus 1 by x equals six.
