Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 60-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 60 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Polynomials and Remainder Theorem Level 2 Questions: Zeroes and Factors

Level 2 of the Polynomials and Remainder Theorem practice series on Aptitude360 moves past direct substitution into multi-step algebra. It tests remainders on dividing by a linear term with a leading coefficient, conditions that fix two unknown coefficients, symmetric expressions in the zeroes of quadratics and cubics, and HCF and LCM relations.

What the Level 2 polynomials questions test

  • Remainder on dividing by a linear divisor whose leading coefficient is not one
  • Finding one or two unknown coefficients from given factors or remainders
  • Symmetric functions of zeroes such as sum of squares, sum of cubes and square of the difference
  • Zeroes of a cubic in arithmetic progression and zeroes in a given ratio
  • Complete factorisation of cubics and quadratics with surd coefficients
  • Counting distinct real zeroes and using the HCF and LCM relation

Key formulas and rules for zeroes and remainders

  • Divisor \( ax-b \): remainder is \( p\left(\dfrac{b}{a}\right) \)
  • Sum of squares: \( \alpha^{2}+\beta^{2}=(\alpha+\beta)^{2}-2\alpha\beta \)
  • Square of difference: \( (\alpha-\beta)^{2}=(\alpha+\beta)^{2}-4\alpha\beta \)
  • Sum of cubes: \( \alpha^{3}+\beta^{3}=(\alpha+\beta)^{3}-3\alpha\beta(\alpha+\beta) \)
  • Cubic \( ax^{3}+bx^{2}+cx+d \): \( \alpha\beta+\beta\gamma+\gamma\alpha=\dfrac{c}{a} \)
  • Same cubic: \( \dfrac{1}{\alpha}+\dfrac{1}{\beta}+\dfrac{1}{\gamma}=-\dfrac{c}{d} \)

Preparation tips for this level

  • Express any symmetric expression in terms of the sum and product of zeroes before substituting values.
  • For zeroes in arithmetic progression, take them as a minus d, a and a plus d so the sum gives the middle zero at once.
  • When two factors are given, write two equations from the Factor Theorem and solve them together.
  • A squared factor gives a repeated zero, and a square plus a positive number gives no real zero.

Who should practise this set

Aptitude aspirants who are comfortable with the first level of polynomial basics and are ready for medium-level problems on zeroes and factors.

FAQs about Polynomials and Remainder Theorem Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 2

How to find the remainder when a polynomial is divided by 2x minus 1?
Set 2x minus 1 equal to zero, which gives x equal to one half. Substitute one half into the polynomial and the value you get is the remainder.
How to find alpha square plus beta square from a quadratic polynomial?
Use the identity alpha square plus beta square equals the square of the sum minus twice the product. Take the sum and product from the coefficients and substitute.
How to factorise a cubic polynomial using factor theorem?
Find a value a for which the cubic becomes zero, so x minus a is a factor. Divide by x minus a to get a quadratic, then factorise that quadratic.
What is the relation between HCF and LCM of two polynomials?
The product of two polynomials equals the product of their HCF and LCM, up to a nonzero constant factor. This lets you find one polynomial when the other and the HCF and LCM are known.
