Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 60-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 60 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

x + 1 by x Type Questions Level 2: Higher Powers and Surd Forms

Aptitude360's Level 2 set of x + 1 by x type questions is an intermediate algebra quiz on reciprocal identities. It moves beyond basic squares to fourth, fifth and sixth powers, reverse problems and surd forms of x. Values taken from quadratics, square roots of x plus its reciprocal and special cases with odd and mixed powers also feature.

Question types in this Level 2 reciprocal set

  • Fourth, fifth and sixth powers of x plus its reciprocal
  • Reverse problems where a higher power is given and the base sum or difference is found
  • Values from quadratics with a constant term of one, with either sign on the middle term
  • Surd forms of x and the square root of x plus its reciprocal
  • Special cases where x equals its own reciprocal, including sums of consecutive powers

Key formulas for higher-power reciprocal identities

  • Fourth power: \( x^{4}+\dfrac{1}{x^{4}}=\left(x^{2}+\dfrac{1}{x^{2}}\right)^{2}-2 \)
  • Sixth power: \( x^{6}+\dfrac{1}{x^{6}}=\left(x^{3}+\dfrac{1}{x^{3}}\right)^{2}-2 \)
  • With \( k=x+\dfrac{1}{x} \): \( x^{5}+\dfrac{1}{x^{5}}=k^{5}-5k^{3}+5k \)
  • Root form: \( \left(\sqrt{x}+\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{x}}\right)^{2}=k+2 \)
  • With \( m=x-\dfrac{1}{x} \): \( x^{2}-\dfrac{1}{x^{2}}=km \)

How to revise for these intermediate problems

  • Build higher powers in a chain: square first, then cube, then combine them
  • In reverse problems, add two and take square roots step by step, using the sign condition given on x
  • When x is a sum with a root, check whether it is the perfect square of a simpler surd

Who should take this Level 2 set

Students who are comfortable with basic reciprocal identities and are preparing algebra for SSC, banking, CAT and similar aptitude exams.

FAQs about x + 1/x Type Questions Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 2

How do you find x to the power 4 plus 1 by x to the power 4?
First find x squared plus 1 by x squared, then square it and subtract 2.
If x plus 1 by x equals minus 2, what is x?
x equals minus 1, since the equation becomes x squared plus 2x plus 1 equals zero, which is (x plus 1) squared. Odd powers of x then equal minus 1 and even powers equal 1.
How do you find x plus 1 by x when x squared plus 1 by x squared is given?
Add 2 to the given value and take the square root, since (x plus 1 by x) squared equals x squared plus 1 by x squared plus 2. Choose the positive root when x is positive.
How do you find root x plus 1 by root x?
Its square equals x plus 1 by x plus 2. So find x plus 1 by x first, add 2 and take the positive square root.
