Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 30-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 30 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Soils of India GK Quiz Level 2: Soil Formation, Erosion and Conservation

The second level of the Soils of India series on Aptitude360 builds reasoning about why soils behave as they do. Questions use statements, matching, odd-one-out and sequencing to test soil formation, the properties of alluvial, black, red, laterite and arid soils, and the stages of gully erosion and bad land formation.

Areas covered in this Level 2 Indian soils quiz

  • Factors of soil formation: relief, climate, vegetation and time
  • Alluvial soil deposits, Khadar and Bangar, and kankar in old alluvium and arid soils
  • Causes of self-ploughing in black soil, its moisture retention and nutrient content
  • Red soil on crystalline igneous rocks and its yellow appearance when hydrated
  • Leaching in laterite soil and the meaning of the word laterite
  • Sheet erosion, gully erosion, Chambal ravines and conservation methods such as contour ploughing and terrace farming

Concepts to sharpen before attempting soil questions

  • Cause and effect links, such as lava flows forming the Deccan trap that later gives black soil
  • Why saline soils are infertile despite their salt content
  • Correct sequence of stages from running water to land unfit for cultivation

Smart revision tips for soils of India

  • Learn the reason behind each property, not just the property, since many questions ask 'why'
  • Practise eliminating options in odd-one-out questions by grouping soils by region or parent rock
  • Revise conservation methods with a one-line description of each to handle matching questions

Who this soils quiz is for

It suits geography learners preparing for UPSC, state PSC and SSC exams who have finished the basics and want deeper practice on soil types and erosion.

FAQs about Soils of India – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 2

Why is black soil called self ploughing?
Black soil develops deep cracks when it dries in summer, which lets air into the lower layers. This natural aeration is why it is described as self ploughing.
What is leaching in laterite soil?
Leaching is the washing away of lime and silica from the soil by heavy rain. Intense leaching in hot, wet areas produces laterite soil.
What causes the ravines of the Chambal basin?
The Chambal ravines are formed by gully erosion, in which running water cuts deep channels into the soil. Over time the land becomes bad land, unfit for cultivation.
How are shelter belts and contour ploughing used in soil conservation?
Shelter belts are rows of trees planted to check wind erosion. Contour ploughing means ploughing along the contour lines of a slope so that water flowing down is slowed.
