Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 75-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 75 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Polynomials and Remainder Theorem Level 3: Advanced Practice Quiz

This Level 3 set on polynomials and the remainder theorem is for students who have finished the basics and want advanced algebra practice. It covers remainders by quadratic divisors, the factor theorem, relations between zeroes and coefficients, and HCF and LCM of polynomials. Aptitude360 gives a step-by-step solution for every question.

Topics covered in this Level 3 polynomials set

  • Remainders on division by linear and quadratic divisors, including high powers of x
  • Factor theorem to find unknown coefficients and complete factorisations
  • Symmetric expressions of zeroes such as sums of squares, cubes and fourth powers
  • Zeroes of cubics, including zeroes in arithmetic progression
  • HCF and LCM of polynomials and finding a missing polynomial from them
  • Degree of products and powers, and counting distinct real zeroes

Key formulas for polynomials and the remainder theorem

  • Remainder theorem: remainder of \( p(x)\div(x-a) \) is \( p(a) \)
  • Quadratic \( ax^{2}+bx+c \): \( \alpha+\beta=-\dfrac{b}{a},\ \alpha\beta=\dfrac{c}{a} \)
  • Cubic \( ax^{3}+bx^{2}+cx+d \): \( \alpha+\beta+\gamma=-\dfrac{b}{a},\ \alpha\beta\gamma=-\dfrac{d}{a} \)
  • Squares of zeroes: \( \alpha^{2}+\beta^{2}=(\alpha+\beta)^{2}-2\alpha\beta \)
  • Cubes of zeroes: \( \alpha^{3}+\beta^{3}=(\alpha+\beta)^{3}-3\alpha\beta(\alpha+\beta) \)

How to revise remainder and zeroes problems

  • For a quadratic divisor with distinct roots, write the remainder as a linear expression and substitute both roots
  • For zeroes in arithmetic progression, take them as a minus d, a and a plus d so the middle zero comes from the sum
  • Rewrite symmetric expressions using the sum and product of zeroes instead of solving for each zero
  • For a divisor like x squared plus x plus one, use the fact that each complex cube root of unity cubes to one

Who should take this polynomials practice set

Aptitude and school algebra learners at the final stage of the topic, after the earlier levels, who want harder problems on remainders, zeroes and HCF and LCM.

FAQs about Polynomials and Remainder Theorem Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 3

What is remainder theorem in polynomials?
The remainder theorem says that when a polynomial p(x) is divided by x minus a, the remainder is p(a). So the remainder can be found by substitution, without long division.
What is the difference between factor theorem and remainder theorem?
The remainder theorem gives the remainder p(a) on division by x minus a. The factor theorem is a special case: x minus a is a factor of p(x) exactly when p(a) equals zero.
How do you find the remainder when a polynomial is divided by a quadratic?
The remainder has degree less than two, so write it as ax plus b. If the quadratic has two distinct roots, substitute each into the polynomial and solve the two equations; for a repeated root, use polynomial division or compare coefficients instead.
What is the proof of the remainder theorem?
By the division algorithm, p(x) equals (x minus a) times q(x) plus r, where r is a constant. Putting x equal to a makes the first term zero, so p(a) equals r.
