Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 35-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 35 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

Ocean Currents and Tides GK Practice Quiz Level 3 for Geography

This Level 3 GK quiz on Aptitude360 tests advanced geography concepts on ocean currents, tides, waves, salinity and the relief of the ocean floor. Most questions use statements, matching and sequencing, so you have to understand why tides rise, how currents move and how the ocean floor is arranged, not just recall facts.

Topics covered in this ocean currents and tides set

  • Spring and neap tides, their order in a lunar month and the Sun–Moon positions behind them
  • Perigee, apogee and perihelion, and the combinations that produce the highest tides
  • Semi-diurnal tides, the ebb and flow cycle, tidal range and tidal energy
  • Causes of ocean currents: solar heating, wind, gravity and Coriolis deflection
  • Wave formation and how energy, not water, travels towards the shore
  • Salinity, brackish water, the thermocline and why the Baltic and Black Seas are less saline
  • Continental shelf, slope, deep sea plain and deeps, mid-oceanic ridges and the Siberian shelf

Key concepts to revise for ocean geography

  • The Moon's pull is the main cause of tides, and the Sun's pull is secondary
  • The Coriolis force deflects currents to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere
  • Rich fishing grounds develop where warm and cold currents meet and plankton multiply
  • Iceland is part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Revision tips for tides and currents questions

  • Draw the Sun, Earth and Moon in a line and at right angles to fix spring and neap tides in memory
  • Pair each salinity anomaly with its cause, such as river inflow and low evaporation
  • Memorise ocean floor divisions in order from the coast outwards so sequence questions become easy

Who should take this Level 3 geography quiz

Aspirants for UPSC, state PSC, SSC and other general awareness papers who have finished the basics and want harder, statement-based practice in physical geography.

FAQs about Oceans: Currents and Tides – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 3

What is the difference between ocean currents and tides?
Ocean currents are continuous horizontal flows of water in a set direction, driven mainly by wind, heating and the Coriolis force. Tides are the periodic rise and fall of sea level caused mainly by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun.
What causes ocean currents?
Ocean currents are caused by heating of water by the Sun, wind blowing over the surface, gravity and the Coriolis force. Differences in salinity and temperature also affect their movement.
What is the difference between spring tide and neap tide?
Spring tides occur at full moon and new moon, when the Sun, Moon and Earth are in a line, and give the highest high tides. Neap tides occur when the Sun and Moon are at right angles to the Earth, so the tidal range is low.
How are ocean waves different from currents and tides?
Waves are mostly formed by wind blowing over the sea surface, and in a wave the energy moves forward while the water mainly moves up and down. Currents move water over long distances, while tides change the sea level periodically.
