Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 30-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 30 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Oceans Currents and Tides Level 2 Geography GK Practice Questions

Aspirants who already know the basic terms of ocean geography can use this Level 2 set to apply them. It is a General Awareness Geography quiz on Aptitude360 covering the thermocline, salinity contrasts, the tidal cycle, current patterns and ocean floor features. Matching, odd-one-out and sequence questions test understanding rather than single facts.

Concepts tested in this Level 2 oceans quiz

  • Order of ocean floor features from coast to open basin, and mid-oceanic ridges
  • Thermocline and how temperature changes with depth
  • Brackish water and the low salinity of the Black Sea
  • Sequence of spring and neap tides through a month, and of flow and ebb
  • Perigee, and how it differs from the solar term perihelion
  • Causes of currents, cold currents along western coasts, and fishing grounds where currents meet
  • Benefits of tides and the formation of tidal bulges

Important ideas on currents and the tidal cycle

  • Two tidal bulges form, one facing the Moon and one on the opposite side
  • Neap tides are lower because the pulls of the Sun and Moon partly cancel
  • River inflow lowers the salinity of enclosed seas
  • Plankton thrives where warm and cold waters mix

Smart revision for ocean currents and tides

  • Write the monthly tide cycle as a moon-phase timeline
  • Keep perigee, apogee, perihelion and aphelion in one table
  • Practise odd-one-out by grouping seas by high or low salinity

Ideal stage for this practice set

Best taken after the beginner level, by General Awareness learners revising Geography for competitive exams.

FAQs about Oceans: Currents and Tides – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 2

What is thermocline in the ocean?
The thermocline is the boundary zone in the ocean where water temperature falls rapidly with increasing depth. It separates the warm surface water from the cold deep water.
Why are the best fishing grounds where warm and cold currents meet?
The mixing of warm and cold water helps plankton grow, and plankton is the main food for fish. Fish therefore gather in large numbers where such currents meet.
Why is the salinity of the Black Sea low?
The Black Sea receives a large inflow of fresh water from rivers, which dilutes its salt content.
What is the difference between perigee and perihelion?
Perigee is the position when the Moon is closest to the Earth. Perihelion is the position when the Earth is closest to the Sun.
