Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 25-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 25 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Ocean Currents and Tides GK Practice Quiz Level 1: Waves, Salinity, Ocean Floor

Level 1 of the Oceans: Currents and Tides series on Aptitude360 is a beginner General Awareness quiz in physical geography. It covers tides, waves, ocean currents, sea water salinity and the relief of the ocean floor. Most questions are direct and one-line, which makes the set a quick way to fix the core terms of oceanography.

What this oceans GK set covers

  • Causes of tides, spring and neap tides, perigee and apogee, and flood and ebb tides
  • Diurnal and semi-diurnal tides, the Bay of Fundy and the Durgaduani tidal power project
  • Wave anatomy: crest, trough, wavelength and wave height
  • Warm and cold currents, the Gulf Stream and deflection by the Coriolis force
  • Salinity in parts per thousand, the Red Sea and the Baltic Sea
  • Ocean floor relief: continental shelf and slope, deep-sea plains, trenches and mid-ocean ridges

Core oceanography concepts to know

  • Sun, Moon and Earth alignment as the deciding factor between spring and neap tides
  • Why rich fishing grounds form where warm and cold currents meet
  • How a wave moves energy forward while the water itself mainly moves up and down
  • How river inflow and evaporation make salinity lower or higher

Study tips for currents and tides

  • Sketch the Sun, Moon and Earth positions for each tide type instead of memorising the definitions
  • Revise ocean floor features in order from the coast outward, from shelf to trench
  • Pair every named current with its ocean and note whether it is warm or cold

Who this Level 1 quiz is for

It is meant for General Awareness beginners starting oceanography, before they move on to the higher levels of the series.

FAQs about Oceans: Currents and Tides – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 1

What is the difference between ocean currents and tides?
Tides are the regular rise and fall of sea level, caused mainly by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun. Ocean currents are continuous horizontal flows of water in a set direction, driven by winds, temperature and salinity differences.
What is the difference between spring tide and neap tide?
Spring tides occur when the Sun, the Moon and the Earth are in a straight line, on full moon and new moon days, and they produce the highest tides. Neap tides occur when the Sun and the Moon are at right angles to the Earth, and the tidal range is smaller.
Which direction does the Coriolis force deflect ocean currents?
The Coriolis force deflects moving water to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.
Is the Gulf Stream a warm or cold current?
The Gulf Stream is a warm ocean current. It flows from the Gulf of Mexico across the North Atlantic and keeps the coasts of north-western Europe milder than other places at the same latitude.
