Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 35-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 35 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Interior of the Earth and Rocks GK Practice Quiz: Advanced Level 3

This Level 3 GK quiz is for geography learners who already know the basics of the Earth's interior and rocks and now want harder, statement-based revision. It tests the layers of the Earth, Sial, Sima and Nife, earthquake waves, the rock cycle and the three rock types. Aptitude360 includes a worked explanation with every question.

Topics in this Earth's interior and rocks quiz

  • Crust, mantle and core: their order, thickness and share of the Earth's volume
  • What Sial, Sima and Nife stand for and which part of the Earth each describes
  • P-waves and S-waves, and how they reveal the structure of the interior
  • Deepest mines and drilling, and why direct study of the interior is limited
  • The rock cycle and the formation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks
  • Rocks used in Indian monuments such as the Red Fort and the Taj Mahal

Key concepts to revise on the Earth's layers and rock types

  • The crust is thicker under continents than under the ocean floor
  • P-waves travel faster than S-waves, and S-waves cannot pass through liquids
  • Intrusive igneous rocks such as granite have large grains, while extrusive rocks such as basalt have fine grains
  • Limestone changes to marble and clay changes to slate under heat and pressure
  • Sedimentary rocks form in layers and may contain fossils

Revision tips for Earth's interior questions

  • Draw the layers of the Earth from the surface to the centre and label each with its material
  • Make a table of parent rock and metamorphic rock pairs for match-the-list questions
  • Trace the rock cycle as a loop so that sequence questions become easy to arrange

Who should take this Level 3 geography quiz

It suits general awareness and geography aspirants at the final revision stage who are comfortable with the easier levels of this series and want exam-style statement questions.

FAQs about Interior of the Earth and Rocks – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 3

What is the interior of the earth made of?
The Earth's interior has three main layers: the crust, the mantle and the core. The core is made mostly of nickel and iron, which is why it is called Nife.
How do we know about the interior of the earth?
Drilling and mining reach only a thin part of the crust. Scientists study the interior mainly by tracking how earthquake waves travel through it, and also through volcanic material.
What are the three types of rocks?
The three types are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rocks form from cooled magma or lava, sedimentary rocks from pressed layers of sediment, and metamorphic rocks from existing rocks changed by heat and pressure.
Which layer of the earth is the largest by volume?
The mantle is the largest layer by volume, making up more than four-fifths of the Earth. The crust forms the smallest share.
