Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 30-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 30 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Interior of the Earth and Rocks Level 2 GK Practice Quiz: Layers and Rocks

This Level 2 geography set builds the ability to compare the Earth's layers, interpret earthquake-wave evidence and trace the rock cycle. Questions use statement, matching, odd-one-out and sequencing formats on the crust, mantle, core and the three rock types. Every answer is explained on Aptitude360.

What this Earth's interior and rocks set tests

  • Volume shares and depths of the crust, mantle and core
  • Composition of Sial, Sima and Nife
  • Speed of P-waves, why S-waves stop at liquids and how the shadow zones differ
  • Direct evidence from deep drilling such as Kola, and indirect evidence from earthquake waves
  • Grain size in intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks
  • Formation of sedimentary rocks, fossils and the agents that deposit sediments
  • Metamorphic changes and the full rock cycle in sequence

Key concepts for medium-level rock questions

  • Correctly matched and wrongly matched pairs of rock and rock type
  • Ordering layers from the surface to the centre
  • Common features of basalt and granite as igneous rocks
  • Spotting false statements, such as marble being called igneous

Revision tips for Earth's layers and the rock cycle

  • Read each numbered statement on its own before choosing an option in statement-based questions
  • Practise writing the rock cycle as a loop from magma to igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock
  • Keep a table of monuments and plateaus with the rock they are made of

Who should take this Level 2 quiz

Aspirants who have completed the basic level of this chapter and are ready for trickier, exam-style questions on the same facts.

FAQs about Interior of the Earth and Rocks – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 2

What is the difference between Sial and Sima?
Sial is the continental crust made mainly of silica and alumina. Sima lies below it and forms the oceanic crust, made mainly of silica and magnesium.
What is the shadow zone of earthquake waves?
A shadow zone is an area on the Earth's surface where a particular type of seismic wave is not detected. The S-wave shadow zone is much larger than the P-wave shadow zone because S-waves cannot pass through the liquid outer core.
What is the rock cycle?
The rock cycle is the process in which one type of rock keeps changing into another. Magma cools into igneous rock, rocks break into sediments that form sedimentary rock, and heat and pressure turn rocks into metamorphic rock, which can melt into magma again.
Which is the largest layer of the Earth by volume?
The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth by volume. It lies between the crust and the core.
