Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 60-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 60 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Counting Figures Level 3 Reasoning Practice: Triangles, Squares, Lines

Counting triangles, squares and rectangles hidden in a figure, and finding the fewest straight lines needed to draw it, are the skills tested in this Level 3 Counting Figures set. Aptitude360 pitches it at the hard end of the topic. A worked solution with each question shows a systematic way to count without missing shapes.

Question types in Counting Figures Level 3

  • Counting every triangle in a given figure
  • Counting squares in a given figure
  • Counting rectangles with squares included in the total
  • Finding the minimum number of straight lines needed to draw a figure

Counting formulas and rules to remember

  • Triangles from \( n \) lines through one vertex to the base (outer sides included): \( \dfrac{n(n-1)}{2} \)
  • Squares in an \( n\times n \) grid: \( \dfrac{n(n+1)(2n+1)}{6} \)
  • Rectangles in an \( m\times n \) grid: \( \dfrac{m(m+1)n(n+1)}{4} \)
  • Rectangles in an \( n\times n \) grid: \( \left(\dfrac{n(n+1)}{2}\right)^{2} \)

Ways to count figures without errors

  • Label every corner and intersection with a letter, then list shapes by their corner letters
  • Count by size: single-part shapes first, then shapes made of two parts, then larger ones
  • For straight lines, treat a continuous segment as one line even when it crosses several shapes
  • Split a crowded figure into simpler pieces, then add shapes that cross the dividing lines

Who this hard set suits

Logical reasoning learners who are comfortable with the easier Counting Figures levels and want tougher figures before competitive exams.

FAQs about Counting Figures Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 3

How to count triangles in a figure quickly?
Label all the corner points and count triangles made of one part, then two parts, and so on. If n lines, including the two outer sides, run from one vertex to the base, the count is n times n minus one, divided by two.
What is the formula for counting squares in a grid?
An n by n grid contains n times n plus one times two n plus one, divided by six, squares. This equals the sum of the squares of the whole numbers from one to n.
How many rectangles are there in an m by n grid?
Choose any two of the m plus one horizontal lines and any two of the n plus one vertical lines. The total is m times m plus one times n times n plus one, divided by four, and it includes the squares.
How to find the minimum number of straight lines in a figure?
Count horizontal, vertical and slanting lines separately. A continuous straight segment counts as one line even if it runs across several shapes.
