Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 50-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 50 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Counting Figures Level 2 Reasoning Practice: Triangles, Squares and Lines

This Level 2 Counting Figures set is medium-level reasoning practice. It checks whether you can count every triangle, square and rectangle inside a figure, including overlapping shapes, and find the minimum number of straight lines needed to draw it. On Aptitude360, every question has a worked solution that breaks the figure down piece by piece.

What this Counting Figures set asks you to count

  • Triangles formed by inner and crossing lines
  • Squares of every size within a figure
  • Rectangles, with squares included
  • Minimum number of straight lines needed to draw a figure

Counting figures formulas for standard patterns

  • Squares in an \( n \times n \) grid: \( \dfrac{n(n+1)(2n+1)}{6} \)
  • Rectangles in an \( m \times n \) grid: \( \dfrac{m(m+1)}{2}\times\dfrac{n(n+1)}{2} \)
  • Triangles when \( n \) lines (both sides included) join the apex to the base: \( \dfrac{n(n-1)}{2} \)

Core ideas for accurate shape counting

  • Labelling every corner and intersection point with a letter
  • Separating single-piece shapes from those formed by combining pieces
  • Treating collinear segments as one straight line

Revision tips for figure counting questions

  • Count the smallest shapes first, then shapes made of two, three or more pieces
  • Split a complex figure into a known pattern and apply its formula before adding extra shapes
  • For straight-line questions, count horizontal, vertical and slanting lines separately

Who this Level 2 set suits

Reasoning aspirants who know the basics of figure counting and want medium-level practice before denser figures.

FAQs about Counting Figures Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 2

What is the trick for counting triangles in a figure?
Label every corner and intersection point, then count the smallest triangles first and move to triangles formed by combining two, three or more pieces. Listing triangles by vertex letters prevents double counting.
What is the formula for counting squares in a grid?
In a square grid of n rows and n columns, the number of squares is the sum of the squares of the first n natural numbers. For example, a four by four grid has 1 + 4 + 9 + 16 = 30 squares.
How do you count rectangles in a grid?
Every rectangle is formed by choosing two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. A grid of 2 rows and 3 columns has 3 ways to pick the horizontal pair and 6 for the vertical pair, giving 18 rectangles, squares included.
How do you find the minimum number of straight lines in a figure?
Treat all segments lying on the same straight line as one line, then count the horizontal, vertical and slanting lines separately and add them.
