FAQs about Climate and Monsoon of India – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 3

Why does India have a monsoon type of climate?
India has a monsoon climate because of the seasonal reversal of winds caused by unequal heating of the land and the surrounding seas. In summer, low pressure over the land draws in moist south-west winds from the Indian Ocean, while in winter dry winds blow from the land towards the sea.
What is the burst of the monsoon?
The burst of the monsoon is the sudden onset of heavy rain that continues for several days when the monsoon winds arrive. The southwest monsoon generally reaches the Indian mainland first along the Kerala coast.
Why does the Tamil Nadu coast get rain in winter?
In winter the north-east winds blow over the Bay of Bengal and pick up moisture before reaching the Tamil Nadu coast. As a result, this coast receives much of its rainfall when most of India is dry.
What are western disturbances?
Western disturbances are low pressure systems that come from the Mediterranean Sea and western Asia during the cold season. They bring light winter rain, called mahawat, to north-west India, which helps the rabi crops.
