Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 35-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 35 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Carbon Compounds and Everyday Chemistry GK Practice Quiz, Level 3

The Carbon Compounds and Everyday Chemistry GK Quiz, Level 3, is a Level 3 set on Aptitude360 covering organic chemistry for general awareness. It covers carbon bonding and allotropes, hydrocarbons, ethanol and ethanoic acid, soaps, combustion and flames, and plastics and fibres. Questions mostly use statement-based and match-the-list formats, and every question has a worked explanation.

Topics covered in this carbon compounds GK set

  • Tetravalency, catenation and covalent bonding of carbon
  • Diamond and graphite as allotropes of carbon
  • Saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, homologous series, isomers of butane and substitution in methane
  • Ethanol, denatured alcohol, vinegar, glacial ethanoic acid and esters
  • Soaps and detergents: saponification, micelles and hard water
  • Combustion: ignition temperature, calorific value, candle flame zones and controlling fires
  • Hydrogenation of vegetable oils with a nickel catalyst
  • Rayon, nylon, polyester, PVC, polythene, Bakelite and melamine

Key everyday chemistry concepts to revise

  • Why graphite is soft and conducts electricity while diamond is hard
  • Which flame zone is luminous, which is hottest and which holds unburnt wax vapour
  • Why carbon dioxide smothers fires and why water is unsafe on oil and electrical fires
  • Semi-synthetic rayon versus fully synthetic nylon
  • Thermoplastics that soften on heating versus thermosetting plastics that do not
  • Natural acids and their sources, such as citric, lactic and formic acid

Revision tips for carbon compounds questions

  • Make a two-column table of thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics with one everyday use of each.
  • Draw a labelled candle flame from memory until you can name all three zones without notes.
  • Read every numbered statement on its own, since one wrong word such as lighter or heavier changes the answer.

Who this everyday chemistry quiz suits

General awareness aspirants who have covered the basics of carbon compounds and want exam-style statement and matching practice during revision.

FAQs about Carbon Compounds and Everyday Chemistry – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 3

What are the allotropes of carbon?
Diamond, graphite and fullerenes are the main allotropes of carbon. They are all made only of carbon atoms but arranged differently, which gives them very different properties.
Why is carbon called tetravalent?
Carbon has four valence electrons. It completes its octet by sharing them through four covalent bonds rather than by gaining or losing electrons.
How does soap remove oily dirt?
Soap molecules have an ionic end that is attracted to water and a long hydrocarbon tail that is attracted to oil. The tails surround the oily dirt to form micelles, which are then washed away by water.
What is the difference between thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic?
A thermoplastic such as polythene or PVC softens on heating and can be reshaped. A thermosetting plastic such as Bakelite or melamine does not soften again once it has set.
