Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 25-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 25 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

The questions are direct, one-line recall questions suited to building basics. Every question has a written explanation.

What this carbon compounds GK set tests

  • Valence electrons, covalent bonding and catenation in carbon
  • Allotropes: diamond, graphite and Buckminsterfullerene
  • Saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, alkenes and alkynes, flame types
  • Homologous series, isomers and functional groups in alcohols and carboxylic acids
  • Ethanol, denatured alcohol, ethanoic acid, vinegar and esters
  • Soaps, saponification, micelles and hard water
  • Fuels, ignition temperature, calorific value, carbon monoxide and fire extinguishers
  • Fibres and plastics such as rayon, nylon and Bakelite

Key concepts in everyday carbon chemistry

  • Hydrogenation of vegetable oils with a nickel catalyst
  • Substitution reaction of chlorine with methane in sunlight
  • Zones of a candle flame and their uses
  • Bakelite as a thermosetting plastic used to make electrical switches

Revision tips for carbon compounds

  • Link each allotrope to its structure and use, such as layered graphite in pencil leads
  • Pair every functional group with the class of compound it defines
  • Match each type of fire with the right extinguisher, such as carbon dioxide for petrol fires

Who should take this Level 1 quiz

Beginners revising general science for competitive exams who want a firm base in carbon chemistry before moving to the higher levels of this series.

FAQs about Carbon Compounds and Everyday Chemistry – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 1

What is catenation in carbon?
Catenation is the ability of carbon to form bonds with other carbon atoms, giving long chains, branched chains and rings. It is the main reason carbon forms so many compounds.
What are the allotropes of carbon?
The main allotropes of carbon are diamond, graphite and fullerenes such as Buckminsterfullerene. Diamond is the hardest natural substance, while graphite is soft, slippery and conducts electricity.
How does soap remove dirt?
Soap molecules form clusters called micelles, with their oil-loving tails trapping grease inside and their water-loving heads facing outward. The trapped dirt is then washed away with water.
What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons?
Saturated hydrocarbons have only single bonds between carbon atoms and usually burn with a clean blue flame. Unsaturated hydrocarbons have double or triple bonds and usually burn with a sooty yellow flame.
