Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 60-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 60 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Boat and Stream Level 2 Practice Quiz: Upstream and Downstream Speeds

This set is for learners who know what upstream and downstream mean and are ready for medium-level practice. It is the Level 2 boat and stream quiz on Aptitude360, covering stream speed, the speed of a boat in still water, round-trip times, time ratios and average speed. Every question comes with a worked solution.

What this Boat and Stream Level 2 quiz covers

  • Speed of the stream from distances covered upstream and downstream
  • Speed of a boat in still water from its upstream and downstream speeds
  • Total time for a downstream trip and the return trip
  • Distance to a place from the total round-trip time
  • Ratio of upstream to downstream time for the same distance
  • Average speed over a complete round trip
  • Pairs of trips that lead to two linear equations

Boat and stream formulas you need

  • Downstream speed: \( D=u+v \)
  • Upstream speed: \( U=u-v \)
  • Boat speed in still water: \( u=\dfrac{D+U}{2} \)
  • Stream speed: \( v=\dfrac{D-U}{2} \)
  • Average speed of a round trip: \( \dfrac{u^{2}-v^{2}}{u} \)
  • Upstream to downstream time ratio: \( \dfrac{u+v}{u-v} \)

How to revise boats and streams well

  • Write the downstream and upstream speeds first, and most questions reduce to simple speed, distance and time.
  • For the same distance, time is inversely proportional to speed, so a time ratio gives the inverse speed ratio.
  • When two trips are described, take the reciprocals of the upstream and downstream speeds as variables to get linear equations.
  • Bring all times to the same unit as the speeds before substituting.

Who this set is for

It suits SSC, bank and other competitive exam aspirants who have finished the basics and want steady medium-level practice before harder boat and stream problems.

FAQs about Boat and Stream Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 2

What is the formula for boat and stream?
Downstream speed equals boat speed plus stream speed, and upstream speed equals boat speed minus stream speed. The boat's speed in still water is half the sum of these two speeds, and the stream speed is half their difference.
What is the difference between upstream and downstream?
Downstream means moving in the direction of the current, so the stream adds to the boat's speed. Upstream means moving against the current, so the stream reduces the boat's speed.
How do you find the speed of the stream in boat and stream questions?
Find the downstream and upstream speeds from the given distances and times. Then subtract the upstream speed from the downstream speed and halve the result.
Why is the average speed of a round trip in a river less than the boat's speed in still water?
The boat spends more time going upstream at the lower speed than going downstream at the higher speed. Because the slower part takes longer, the average speed works out below the still-water speed.
