Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 75-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 75 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Boat and Stream Level 3 Hard Practice: Log Float and Cap Problems

Level 3 is meant for students in the final stage of arithmetic preparation who are already comfortable with standard boat and stream problems. It covers tricky cases such as a dropped cap, a floating log, a current that changes speed and boats moving towards each other. Every question on Aptitude360 has a worked solution.

What the Level 3 boat and stream problems test

  • Still-water and stream speed from two combined trips
  • A cap dropped while rowing upstream and found later downstream
  • Time for a log to float between two points from the boat's downstream and upstream times
  • Return trips where rain or a halt changes the stream speed or the travel time
  • Two boats moving towards each other from towns on the same river
  • Round-trip average speed and percentage differences in upstream and downstream time
  • Trips that turn back at the midpoint or include an engine failure

Advanced boat and stream formulas and rules

  • Time ratio, same distance: \( \dfrac{t_{up}}{t_{down}}=\dfrac{u+v}{u-v} \)
  • Log float time, with \( t_{d} \) downstream and \( t_{u} \) upstream boat times for the same distance: \( \dfrac{2t_{d}t_{u}}{t_{u}-t_{d}} \)
  • Round-trip average speed: \( \dfrac{u^{2}-v^{2}}{u} \)
  • Stream speed: \( v=\dfrac{D-U}{2} \)
  • Boats approaching each other: closing speed \( =u_{1}+u_{2} \)

How to prepare for hard boat and stream problems

  • In cap and log problems, measure motion relative to the water: the stream carries both boat and object equally, so it cancels out.
  • When the stream speed changes on the way back, write a separate time term for each leg.
  • Turn percentage time differences into a speed ratio first, then solve for the unknown speed.
  • Check that your stream speed is less than the still-water speed, or the boat could not move upstream.

Who this hard level is for

It is best taken after the earlier levels by aspirants of bank, SSC and MBA entrance exams who want to handle unusual boat and stream problems with confidence.

FAQs about Boat and Stream Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 3

How to solve the dropped cap problem in boat and stream?
Relative to the water the cap is at rest, so the boat takes as long to return to the cap as it spent moving away from it. The stream speed is then the distance the cap drifted divided by the total time.
How do you find the time taken by a log to float downstream?
A log moves at the speed of the stream, so the time is the distance divided by the stream speed. The stream speed is half the difference between the downstream and upstream speeds.
What is the average speed of a boat for a round trip?
For a trip to a point and back, the average speed equals the still-water speed squared minus the stream speed squared, all divided by the still-water speed. It is always less than the still-water speed.
If a boat takes longer upstream, how do you find the speed ratio?
For the same distance, time is inversely proportional to speed, so the ratio of upstream time to downstream time equals the ratio of downstream speed to upstream speed.
