Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 60-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 60 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Sentence Improvement Level 3 Practice Questions on Inversion with Hardly

This Level 3 set gives sentence improvement practice, where you choose the option that correctly replaces a quoted part of an English sentence. It also tests tricky word order, such as inversion after Hardly at the start of a sentence. Aptitude360 offers the set free, with a worked solution for every question that explains the rule behind the correct option.

What this Level 3 sentence improvement set tests

  • Replacing a quoted phrase with the grammatically correct and natural option
  • Inversion of the auxiliary and subject when Hardly opens a sentence
  • Using the past perfect for the earlier of two quick past events
  • Pairing Hardly with the right connector, when, in the second clause

Key sentence improvement concepts to revise

  • How the auxiliary verb moves before the subject after a restrictive adverb such as Hardly
  • Sequence of tenses when one past action happens just before another
  • Fixed connector pairs that cannot be swapped with each other
  • Checking whether the quoted part fits the grammar of the unquoted part

Revision tips for tricky sentence improvement questions

  • Read the whole sentence first, because the error in the quoted part often depends on words outside it
  • When a sentence begins with Hardly, check the word order and tense before anything else
  • Rule out options that change the meaning of the sentence, even when they are grammatically correct
  • Note every corrected sentence in a notebook and read it aloud so the right pattern starts to sound natural

Who should take this sentence improvement practice set

This set suits students preparing for the English section of competitive exams who are comfortable with the first two levels of sentence improvement and want practice on harder sentence structures.

FAQs about Sentence Improvement Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 3

What is sentence improvement in English?
Sentence improvement is a question type in which part of a sentence is marked and you choose the option that makes it grammatically correct and natural. If the marked part is already correct, you pick the no improvement option when one is given.
Is it Hardly had or Hardly did with when?
When Hardly begins a sentence about one past event followed quickly by another, it takes inversion with the past perfect, as in 'Hardly had the train left when it began to rain.' The connector used with Hardly is when, not than.
Why is the word order inverted after Hardly?
Hardly is a restrictive adverb, and when such an adverb begins a sentence, English places the auxiliary verb before the subject. So 'Hardly the train had left' becomes 'Hardly had the train left'.
How do you solve sentence improvement questions quickly?
Read the full sentence, find the grammar point at stake in the marked part, and check tense, agreement and word order. Then rule out options that are wrong or change the meaning, and choose the one that fits best.
