FAQs about Peasant and Tribal Movements – GK Quiz with Answers – Level 1

What are peasant and tribal movements in India?
They are uprisings by farmers and forest communities against colonial exploitation by planters, moneylenders, landlords and forest officials. Well-known examples include the indigo revolt, the Santhal rebellion, the Deccan revolt and the movement led by Birsa Munda.
Who led the Santhal rebellion?
The Santhal rebellion was led by the brothers Sidhu and Kanhu. After it was put down, the British created Santhal Pargana to address some of the Santhals' grievances.
What was the difference between nij and ryoti cultivation of indigo?
Under nij cultivation, the planter grew indigo on land he controlled directly, using hired labour. Under the ryoti system, ryots signed a contract called satta and grew indigo on their own land in return for cash advances.
Why did the Deccan revolt take place?
Ryots in the Deccan were deeply in debt to moneylenders and faced harsh revenue demands. They attacked moneylenders and burnt their account books and debt bonds, and the government then set up the Deccan Riots Commission.
