Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 60-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

How the two modes differ
No account needed

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.
Real exam conditions

Simulated

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 60 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Direction Sense Level 3 Practice Questions on Shadows, Turns and Codes

Direction Sense Level 3 is an advanced reasoning practice set on multi-leg walks, shortest distances, shadow-based facing problems, coded direction symbols and clockwise and anticlockwise rotations. Aptitude360 gives a worked solution for every question. Many problems also compare two people starting from one point to find their relative position.

What this direction sense set tests

  • Multi-leg walks with left and right turns and the final shortest distance
  • Diagonal movement along north-east and other intercardinal directions
  • Shadow problems using sunrise and evening positions of the sun
  • Coded symbols standing for directions and distances
  • Clockwise and anticlockwise rotations by non-right angles
  • Relative position of two walkers starting from one point
  • Renamed compass directions under a fixed rotation

Key direction sense concepts to revise

  • The eight compass directions and the angle between neighbouring ones
  • Left and right relative to the current facing direction, not the page
  • In the morning the sun is in the east, so shadows fall towards the west, and in the evening they fall towards the east
  • Net displacement from adding east-west and north-south movements separately
  • Pythagoras theorem for the straight-line distance from the start

Revision tips for tough direction problems

  • Draw each leg on rough paper with north at the top before calculating.
  • Reduce a chain of turns to one net turn by subtracting anticlockwise angles from clockwise ones.
  • For coded symbols, convert each relation into a coordinate shift and add them up.
  • In shadow questions, fix the sun's position first, then deduce the facing direction.

Who should take this set

Reasoning aspirants who have mastered basic direction questions and want hard practice with angles, shadows and coded relations.

FAQs about Direction Sense Problems Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 3

How to improve direction sense for reasoning questions?
Always draw a diagram with north at the top and note each turn from the person's current facing direction. Regular practice of multi-leg walks and rotation problems builds speed.
How to solve direction sense problems with shadows?
The sun rises in the east, so in the morning shadows fall towards the west, and in the evening they fall towards the east. Find where the shadow falls relative to the person, then deduce the facing direction.
How do you find the shortest distance in direction sense problems?
Add up the total east-west movement and the total north-south movement separately. The shortest distance is the square root of the sum of their squares, by Pythagoras theorem.
How do clockwise and anticlockwise turns work in direction sense?
A clockwise turn moves from north towards east, and an anticlockwise turn moves from north towards west. Each 45-degree turn shifts the facing direction by one step among the eight compass directions.
