Order and Ranking Reasoning Practice Quiz: Level 1 Basics
These questions test positions in a row, queue, stack or class. You find a rank from the other end, the total number of persons from two ranks, and the number of people between two persons, along with interchange of places and comparisons of height, weight, age or test scores. This Level 1 order and ranking set on Aptitude360 builds verbal reasoning basics, with a worked solution for every question.
Topics covered in this Order and Ranking set
- Position of a person from the left or right end of a row
- Rank from the top or bottom of a class, and the number of students ranked below a person
- Total persons in a queue or row when both end positions are known
- Number of persons between two people in a row
- Interchange of positions and finding the total length of the row
- Boxes or blocks in a vertical stack, counted from the top or bottom
- Comparing heights, weights, ages and test scores to find the tallest, lightest or second highest
- Middle position in a row and shifting places towards one end
Key order and ranking formulas
- Total from both-end positions: \( T=L+R-1 \)
- Position from the other end: \( R=T-L+1 \)
- Between two people, left-counted person on the left: \( T-(L+R) \)
- Between two people, left-counted person on the right: \( L+R-T-2 \)
- After interchange: \( T=A_{\text{new}}+B_{R}-1 \)
- Middle of an odd row: \( \dfrac{n+1}{2} \)
Revision tips for ranking and comparison questions
- Draw a quick line diagram showing both ends of the row before applying any formula.
- Before counting the people between two persons, check which of them stands further left, because the formula changes with their order.
- For comparison questions, write one chain from tallest to shortest using the greater-than sign.
- When some students fail, add them to the passed total to get the number who appeared.
