Normal practice, or a Simulated test

Both use the same questions. Normal practice is untimed and needs no account: choose an option and the answer and solution appear at once. The Simulated test is the real computer-based format, with one 50-minute clock, a question palette and full screen, and your score, the key and the solutions arrive when you submit.

Normal

Untimed

Every question on one page, loading as you scroll. Choose an option and see straight away whether it was right.

  • No timer. Nothing to start and nothing to submit. Stop whenever you like.
  • Answered as you choose. Tap an option and it is marked at once, with the correct answer shown.
  • Solutions in place. The explanation, and the video where one has been added, sit under the question.
  • Open to guests. Normal practice needs no sign-in.

Timed CBT

The computer-based test format: one clock, a question palette, and a score the moment you submit.

  • A clock that does not pause. 50 minutes from the moment you begin, and the paper is submitted for you when it reaches zero.
  • Question palette. Answered, not answered and marked for review, section by section, as the real interface has it.
  • Full screen, proctored. The test takes over the screen; leaving it three times submits the paper.
  • Answers hidden until you submit. The key, the explanations and your score all arrive together at the end.

About this test

Direct and Indirect Speech Level 1 Practice: Commands, Statements, Exclamations

This is a Level 1 English grammar set on direct and indirect speech, focused on the basic rules of reported speech. Aptitude360 builds it around three everyday sentence types: commands, statements and exclamations. Each question comes with a worked solution that shows how the reporting verb, pronoun and tense change.

Topics covered in this Level 1 narration set

  • Reporting commands that begin with do not, using told followed by not to
  • Statements in the present continuous tense and their backshift to the past continuous
  • Exclamations of regret beginning with how, reported with exclaimed
  • Fill-in-the-blank items on the correct verb form after said that
  • Pronoun changes from we and I to they and he

Basic reported speech rules to revise

  • Changing said to into told when a command is reported
  • Removing inverted commas and joining a statement with that
  • Moving a present tense one step back when the reporting verb is in the past
  • Turning an exclamation into a plain statement with a suitable adverb such as very

How to prepare for basic narration questions

  • Decide the sentence type first: statement, command or exclamation
  • Keep a short chart of tense backshifts and revise it before practice
  • Compare options closely, since wrong choices often differ by one pronoun or verb form

Who should take this direct speech quiz

Learners starting reported speech who want to build the basic conversion rules before moving on to harder narration levels.

FAQs about Direct and Indirect Speech Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions – Level 1

What are the basic rules of direct and indirect speech?
When the reporting verb is in the past tense, the tense inside the quotation usually moves one step back. Pronouns change to match the speaker and listener, and the inverted commas are removed.
How do you change a command into indirect speech?
Use a reporting verb such as told or ordered, followed by to and the base verb. A command with do not becomes not to, so the teacher told the students not to make a noise.
How does the present continuous change in indirect speech?
After a past reporting verb, the present continuous becomes the past continuous. For example, are watching changes to were watching.
How do you report an exclamation in indirect speech?
Use exclaimed, often with words such as with regret or with joy, and rewrite the exclamation as a statement. For example, how foolish I have been becomes he exclaimed that he had been very foolish.
