TISS Mumbai was established in 1936, but it is not a conventional B-school and never tried to be one. It is well known for its people-, labour-, and public-systems approach to management education, which has made it a leading institute for HR-focused programs. Unlike most management institutes, TISS does not award an MBA degree; it offers MA programs instead. The Mumbai campus, which is the main campus of TISS, is particularly known for its flagship programs in HR, labour relations, and allied fields.

Flagship Management Programs Offered by TISS Mumbai
TISS Mumbai does not offer a PGDM or MBA degree; instead, it offers MA programs in management-related disciplines. Its flagship programs include the MA in Human Resources Management and Labor Relations (HRM & LR), the MA in Organization Development, Change and Leadership (ODCL), and the Master of Hospital Administration (MHA). Among these, HRM & LR remains the most well-known and widely preferred program, particularly for candidates targeting HR, industrial relations, and people-management roles.
TISS Mumbai Admission Process and Entrance Exam (CAT Cutoff & Selection Criteria)
TISS Mumbai accepts CAT scores for its three specialized programs, unlike its other programs for which it uses CUET-PG. The weightage given to CAT and other components varies by course; however, CAT score and gender diversity remain the primary shortlisting criteria. Shortlisted candidates appear for an Online Assessment and a Personal Interview, based on which the final merit list is prepared.
Work experience is optional for most programs, but for Organization Development, Change and Leadership (ODCL), a minimum of two years of full-time work experience is mandatory.

Campus Life at TISS Mumbai: Location, Infrastructure, and Student Experience
The TISS Mumbai campus is located in Deonar, a busy part of the city, and feels very different from a conventional residential B-school. The campus is functional rather than flashy, with most of the academic and hostel life centered within a compact space. While it lacks modern infrastructure, it makes up for this by being closely intertwined with the city, with students regularly stepping out for projects and on-ground work rather than remaining confined within campus boundaries.TISS typically has smaller, program-specific batch sizes, which create close-knit cohorts and focused classroom discussions. This structure makes it easier for students to participate actively, be heard, and build strong peer networks, especially in programs related to HR, labour relations, and allied fields.

The ROI is outstanding, given the low fees and high placements |
Fees at TISS Mumbai vary by program and range from approximately ₹1.85 lakh to ₹4.34 lakh for the full course duration. The program duration is typically two years, and the fee does not include hostel and mess charges, which are paid separately.
Despite this, TISS offers a strong return on investment, particularly for HR, labor relations, and people-centric roles. The relatively low academic fees, combined with stable placement outcomes across corporate, public-sector, and social-impact organizations, keep the overall financial risk limited, especially when compared to private B-schools.

Why Choose TISS Mumbai for MBA? Key Differentiators and Career Outcomes
TISS Mumbai is meant for a selective group of students who are clear about building a career in HR, much like candidates who pursue management education with defined interests in finance or marketing. This selectiveness is one of the institute’s core strengths. TISS attracts students who care as much about what they study as why they study it, rather than those chasing generic management profiles. Its approach blends organizational studies with labor relations, public policy, and social systems, making it structurally distinct from conventional business schools.Located in Mumbai, TISS benefits from proximity to corporate headquarters, public-sector bodies, NGOs, and international organizations, which enables internships, fieldwork, and policy-oriented projects that align closely with the institute’s academic orientation.
