Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad/Mohali
Indian School of Business is often positioned as the closest private-sector equivalent to IIM Ahmedabad. Established in 2001 and inaugurated by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, ISB was designed with a global orientation from the start. Wharton School and Kellogg School of Management act as associate founding schools, with their faculty regularly teaching at ISB under a portfolio faculty model.
ISB is the only business school in India with Triple Crown accreditation—AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA—placing it in the top 1% of B-schools globally. Since it is not affiliated with UGC or AICTE, ISB awards a postgraduate diploma rather than an MBA degree. While this diploma holds strong global acceptance in the private sector, it can restrict access to certain government and public-sector roles.

Flagship Programs Offered by ISB
ISB’s flagship offering is the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), a one-year, full-time residential program designed for professionals with two or more years of work experience. For early-career candidates, ISB offers the PGP for Young Leaders (PGP YL), a 20-month full-time residential program at the Hyderabad campus targeted at freshers and candidates with up to two years of experience.
In addition to its full-time programs, ISB runs multiple modular programs for working professionals and senior leaders. These include PGPpro, an 18-month weekend program for managers with five or more years of experience; PGPMAX, a 15-month modular program for senior executives and CXOs with over ten years of experience; and PGP MFAB, a 15-month program designed for next-generation family business owners, where prior work experience is preferred but not mandatory.
ISB Admission Process and Entrance Exam (Cutoff & Selection Criteria)
ISB follows a holistic admission process rather than a rigid, point-based formula used by many IIMs. While the institute does not disclose official weightages, past admission trends suggest that candidates are evaluated on a balanced mix of academic background, test scores, professional profile, and personal fit. Broadly, academics and GMAT/GRE performance together form the foundation, while essays, recommendations, interviews, and career progression play a decisive role in differentiating candidates.
Admission flow varies by program. For the flagship PGP, candidates with two or more years of work experience apply using GMAT or GRE scores, followed by shortlisting and a single interview round. The PGP YL (Young Leaders) program, targeted at candidates with 0–2 years of experience, follows a more intensive process that includes interviews and on-the-spot essays in addition to the application.
For PGP YL applicants in particular, essays carry significant weight. With limited work experience to evaluate, ISB relies heavily on written responses to assess leadership potential, diversity of thought, and career clarity. Applicants are required to submit multiple essays as part of the application, making narrative quality and self-awareness critical to final selection.

ISB Score Benchmarks: PGP vs. PGP YL (Indicative)
ISB does not publish official cutoffs for any of its programs and follows a holistic evaluation process. However, based on recent admission cycles, applicant disclosures, and aggregated admissions data, the following score ranges indicate what is typically seen among competitive candidates. These figures are indicative benchmarks, not minimum cutoffs, and actual selection may vary depending on overall profile strength, essays, and interview performance.

Campus Life at ISB: Hyderabad & Mohali
ISB operates across two campuses—Hyderabad and Mohali—while following a one school, two campuses model. With the exception of the PGP YL program, all major programs are offered jointly across both campuses. Faculty, curriculum, placements, and academic standards are shared, and students are randomly allotted a campus at the time of admission. Under specific conditions, students can also opt for an inter-campus exchange during the program.
Instead of a traditional hostel setup, ISB follows a student village concept. Students are allotted four-bedroom serviced apartments, shared among four participants, with common living spaces such as a kitchen and lounge. This setup creates a balance between independence and community living.
Campus life is driven by an active ecosystem of 30+ academic, professional, and social clubs. The workload and engagement level have given rise to a well-known inside joke on campus—the sleep–study–social triangle, where students realistically manage to choose only two.

For the PGP programme, with the batch average package standing close to ₹31 lakh—roughly equivalent to the total cost of the programme—ISB offers a solid and defensible return on investment. Even at the lower end of the placement spectrum, where salaries hover around ₹20 LPA, the investment remains recoverable within a reasonable time frame. Viewed over a longer horizon, the returns can turn disproportionate, driven by ISB’s brand recognition, which extends well beyond India and remains largely unmatched by most Indian institutions in global markets.
The PGP YL programme, on the other hand, was launched only in 2025 and is yet to see its first placement cycle. While similar outcomes may be expected given ISB’s institutional backing and shared ecosystem, the significantly higher fee of around ₹51 lakh needs to be weighed carefully, especially from a short-term ROI perspective.
Why Choose ISB for MBA? Key Differentiators and Career Outcomes
ISB plays in a different league from most Indian business schools. It offers global academic exposure and international brand recognition that very few Indian institutes can match. The admissions process focuses on overall profile strength, not just test scores, which results in a cohort with real work experience, industry diversity, and functional depth. This shows up clearly in the classroom and in peer learning.
At most schools, executive-level outcomes come only after you qualify for executive MBAs, which usually require at least three years of work experience. ISB breaks that pattern. Its flagship PGP admits candidates with just 24 months of experience and still delivers outcomes comparable to executive programs. On top of that, tracks like the PGP for Family Business give candidates with family enterprise backgrounds a direct, relevant path instead of forcing them through a generic MBA.

Verdict on ISB (Is It Worth It?) – Aptitude360 Review
If you have two or more years of work experience and want international-grade management education without leaving India, the one-year PGP delivers more value than most traditional two-year MBA programs, provided cost is not a constraint. It compresses executive-level outcomes into a shorter format and offers global recognition that few Indian schools can match.
For freshers entering through the PGP YL, the high fee is a genuine consideration in the short term, although institutional financial aid helps offset part of this burden. The program delivers value comparable to a standard two-year MBA, but over a longer horizon rather than immediate payoff. One clear limitation remains that ISB awards a diploma, not a degree recognized by the Government of India, which restricts access to certain government and PSU roles that explicitly require an MBA.
Frequently Asked Questions
This diploma is widely accepted in the private sector and internationally, but it can restrict eligibility for some government or PSU roles that explicitly require a UGC-recognized MBA degree.
PGP YL: GMAT, GRE, or CAT
CAT is not accepted for the one-year PGP.
ISB places significant weight on essays, especially for PGP YL, where limited work experience makes clarity of thought, leadership potential, and self-awareness critical.
