  • Every year, lakhs of Class 12 students sit in the same tunnel. JEE on one side, NEET on the other. That is it. That is the whole picture most school counsellors draw, and most students never think to look beyond it.

But the reality is different. There are well-designed, nationally recognised entrance exams that open doors to law schools, business schools, liberal arts universities, and management programs at institutions as reputed as the IIMs, so students who skip these exams are not being strategic, they are just uninformed. This blog is the information they were not given.

One important distinction before we start. CUET-UG is an NTA-conducted exam that routes students to Central Universities. The IIM-run programs (IPMAT, JIPMAT, UGAT, BMS-AT) are entirely separate entrance processes managed by the IIMs directly or jointly. A student can and should consider both tracks, but they are not related to each other.

Below are 8 undergraduate entrance exams worth knowing about. What each one is, what it can get you, who is eligible, and the one thing about each exam that most students figure out only after their first attempt.

    1. CLAT (Common Law Admission Test)

CLAT is the centralised national entrance exam for undergraduate law programs at the National Law Universities across India. There are 24 NLUs in the country, most accepting CLAT scores for 5-year integrated law degrees (BA LLB or BBA LLB). The top NLUs, NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, NLU Delhi, WBNUJS Kolkata, are institutions that produce some of the best lawyers, policy professionals, and corporate advisors in the country. Roughly 70,000 students compete for around 2,500 seats across all NLUs, so the overall competition is high but the exam rewards sharp readers, not rote learners.

What you can achieve: Law from a top NLU sets up a career from day one. Corporate law, litigation, policy consulting, judicial services, international arbitration, all of these open up. And unlike engineering or medicine, you do not need 4 more years of postgraduate study before the degree starts paying off.

Eligibility: Any stream, any board. Minimum 45% in Class 12 (40% for SC/ST). No age cap for UG programs.

The one thing to know: CLAT is a reading-heavy exam. The Legal Reasoning and English sections together make up the bulk of it, so a student who reads widely and thinks logically has a structural advantage, regardless of stream.

    2. SET (Symbiosis Entrance Test)

SET is not a single-program exam. Symbiosis International University in Pune runs a large group of undergraduate institutes covering law, business, economics, media, design, and computer science, and SET is the common entrance gateway for most of them. So depending on what you want to study, you could be sitting the same test whether you are aiming for Symbiosis Law School, Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies, or Symbiosis School of Media and Communication.

The exam itself is 60 minutes, 60 questions, computer-based, with four sections: General English, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness, and Analytical and Logical Reasoning. There is no negative marking, and candidates can appear twice in the same year (the higher of the two scores counts). For students who tend to underperform under pressure, this two-attempt structure is a significant practical advantage.

What you can achieve: A Symbiosis degree, particularly from Symbiosis Law School or SCMS Pune, carries good employer recognition. Many students use it as a strong base before pursuing an MBA or further specialisation.

Eligibility: Class 12 pass or appearing. Minimum 50% in Class 12 for General/OBC (45% for SC/ST). Stream requirements vary by institute, so check the specific program. No upper age limit.

    3. CUET-UG (Common University Entrance Test)

CUET-UG is the NTA-conducted national test for undergraduate admissions to Central Universities across India. It is now the primary route for institutions like Delhi University, BHU, JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia, Hyderabad Central University, and over 200 others. The exam is fully computer-based, subject-wise, and runs across multiple slots.

Before CUET, a student from a strict board lost out to one from a lenient board purely on percentage. CUET removed that inequity. Now the test is the same for everyone. For students who are strong in their subject and can handle a structured aptitude exam, this is actually an advantage, not an added burden.

What you can achieve: BCom, BA, BBA, BSc, and dozens of interdisciplinary programs across some of the best Central Universities in the country. DU alone runs hundreds of programs across colleges, so the range of options through a single test is very wide.

Eligibility: Any Class 12 student from any recognised board. No stream restriction for the exam. Individual programs at individual universities may have subject-specific requirements, so subject selection strategy matters a lot.

    4. IPMAT Indore (Integrated Program in Management Aptitude Test)

IIM Indore's 5-year Integrated Program in Management is a direct route to an IIM degree, without completing a regular undergraduate degree first and then cracking CAT at 24. IPMAT Indore is the entrance test for this program and is one of the most competitive UG entrance exams in the country. The reason students take it seriously is simple: the IIM Indore brand is strong enough that placement outcomes from this program sit in the same bracket as MBA graduates from several top IIMs.

What you can achieve: A dual degree, BBA plus an MBA equivalent, from one of India's premier management institutions. Students from this program go into consulting, investment banking, FMCG, and general management straight out of campus.

Eligibility: All streams. Minimum 60% in Class 12 (55% for SC/ST/PwD). Age limit of 20 years as on July 31 of the admission year.

The one thing to know: The competition is steep, roughly 30,000+ students for under 200 seats, so this is not a backup exam. It needs dedicated preparation starting at least 12 months out.

    5. IPMAT Rohtak

IIM Rohtak runs its own 5-year IPM with a separate entrance test. The exam pattern is different from IIM Indore: three sections (Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension), 40 questions each, 120 questions total, 120 minutes, with a +4/-1 marking scheme. There is no sectional time limit, so students can move freely between sections, which rewards smart exam strategy, not just raw subject strength.

What you can achieve: A dual BBA plus MBA degree from IIM Rohtak. The program is building its placement track year on year, with students going into FMCG, consulting, financial services, and analytics. The exit option after 3 years with a BBA also exists under certain academic conditions.

Eligibility: All streams. Minimum 60% in both Class 10 and Class 12 (55% for SC/ST/PwD). Age limit of 20 years at program commencement.

    6. JIPMAT (Joint Integrated Program in Management Admission Test)

JIPMAT is a joint entrance exam conducted by NTA for IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu, both running 5-year IPM programs with a dual BBA plus MBA degree. The exam is 150 minutes, 100 questions across three sections (QA: 33, LR and DI: 33, VARC: 34), with a +4/-1 marking scheme. One number worth knowing: roughly 25,000 to 30,000 students appear for JIPMAT compared to close to 3 lakh for CAT. For students who want an IIM undergraduate pathway, the relative competition here is meaningfully lower.

What you can achieve: A 5-year IIM degree from either Bodh Gaya or Jammu. Both institutions are among the newer IIMs but carry the same IIM designation, alumni network, and regulatory framework. Placements are building year on year, and the IIM tag continues to carry weight with recruiters.

Eligibility: All streams. Minimum 60% in both Class 10 and Class 12 (55% for SC/ST/PwD). Age limit of 20 years as on July 31 of the admission year.

Worth noting: Promotion from BBA to MBA phase is conditional on maintaining a minimum GPA (6.0 at IIM Jammu, above 5.5 at IIM Bodh Gaya). Students who do not meet this threshold exit with a BBA degree.

    7. IIMB UGAT (IIM Bangalore Undergraduate Admissions Test)

IIM Bangalore's UGAT is one of the most interesting programs on this list, and also the most misunderstood. This is not a business administration program in the conventional sense. IIM Bangalore offers two B.Sc. (Hons.) tracks through this exam: B.Sc. (Hons.) in Economics with a minor in Data Science and Business Studies, and B.Sc. (Hons.) in Data Science with a minor in Economics and Business Studies. Both are 4-year residential programs hosted at the Jigani campus near Bannerghatta National Park in Bengaluru. Each cohort is capped at 40 students per course, so the classroom environment is unlike any other institution on this list.

One hard eligibility requirement: Mathematics must have been a subject in Class 12. Students from Commerce without Maths, or from Arts without Maths, are not eligible. This filters the applicant pool significantly and means math-strong students from any stream face less competition.

The exam: 120 minutes, 60 questions, three sections. English Comprehension (15 questions), Logical Reasoning (15 questions), and Quantitative Aptitude plus Data Interpretation (30 questions). The QA and DI section alone carries 50% of the total exam weightage, so students with a strong quantitative foundation have a structural advantage from the start. Marking is +3/-1.

What you can achieve: An IIM Bangalore degree in Economics or Data Science, two fields that are increasingly converging in the job market. The faculty quality, research exposure, and peer group at even a 40-student cohort from IIM Bangalore is exceptional. It is also a very strong foundation for a top MBA or a research career.

Eligibility: All streams, provided Mathematics was studied in Class 12. Minimum 60% in both Class 10 and Class 12 (55% for SC/ST, 40% for PwD). Age limit of 20 years (22 for SC/ST/PwD).

    8. IIMK BMS-AT (IIM Kozhikode Business Management Studies Aptitude Test)

The IIMK BMS-AT is the newest program on this list, launched in 2025 for the 2026-2030 academic cycle. IIM Kozhikode's program is a 4-year residential Bachelor of Management Studies (Honours with Research) at the Kochi campus, with a Major in Management and stackable Minors across five tracks: Economics and Public Policy, AI and Machine Learning, Psychology and Behavioural Sciences, Finance and Big Data, and Marketing, Sales and Digital Promotion. Annual intake is capped at 120 students. The 3-year exit option with a Bachelor's degree also exists.

The exam is 90 minutes, 60 questions, with two sections: Verbal Ability (20 questions) and Quantitative Ability (40 questions). The QA section carries 66.67% of the total exam weightage. This is not an accident, the program has a strong quantitative and analytical orientation, and the exam pattern reflects that. Marking is +3/-1. Students with valid JEE Mains, SAT, or ACT scores are exempted from the exam entirely.

What you can achieve: An IIM Kozhikode undergraduate degree is a strong platform for careers in management consulting, finance, analytics, and entrepreneurship. IIM Kozhikode is one of the older second-generation IIMs with a well-established alumni network and industry presence.

Eligibility: All streams, no Mathematics restriction. Minimum 60% in both Class 10 and Class 12 (55% for SC/ST, 40% for PwD). No upper age limit. IPMAT scores are not accepted for this program.

How to Choose the Right Exam for You

Most students who are serious about these exams should not be picking just one. The skills that help you in CUET help you in IPMAT. The reading comprehension you build for CLAT carries over to every aptitude exam on this list. The quantitative base you need for IPMAT Indore is the same one that makes CAT more approachable three years later. This skill transfer is the core reason aptitude-focused preparation pays off so much, and why starting early almost always outperforms starting harder.

That said, here is a rough framework for choosing. If law is the goal, CLAT is non-negotiable. If the goal is a broad Central University experience with the widest possible college options, CUET is the primary exam. If management is certain, the IIM programs are the cleanest path, so the question is just whether the 5-year IPM route (Indore, Rohtak, JIPMAT) or the 4-year BMS/B.Sc. route (IIMB, IIMK) suits better. And if a structured private university experience without the pressure of IIM cutoffs is the preference, SET is a well-designed path with a student-friendly two-attempt format.

The single most common mistake students make is treating these as harder versions of board exams. They are not. They test reasoning, aptitude, and speed under pressure, and those skills are trainable with the right preparation approach.

Not Sure Where to Start? Talk to Someone Who Knows

Choosing between 8 exams across law, quantitative science, management, and liberal arts, each with different patterns, different cutoffs, and different career outcomes, is a lot to figure out on your own. One focused conversation with the right person cuts through months of confusion.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this topic

    A
Class 11 is the right time. Starting early gives space to build the aptitude foundation, attempt full mocks, and course-correct without panic. Most students who crack IPMAT Indore or get into top NLUs started focused preparation 12 to 18 months before the exam date.
    A
Yes. The aptitude skills tested across CUET, IPMAT, JIPMAT, CLAT, and SET overlap significantly. Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, and Reading Comprehension appear in almost every exam on this list. A coaching setup with a strong aptitude foundation can prepare you for multiple exams simultaneously without starting from scratch for each one.
    A
It is a quantitative social science program, not a conventional management degree. The B.Sc. (Hons.) in Economics or Data Science from IIM Bangalore is research-oriented and analytically intensive. It is excellent preparation for an MBA, a research career, or roles in data-driven industries, but students expecting a standard BBA-style curriculum should know it is a different kind of program.
    A
JIPMAT (IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu) has the lowest applicant pool, with roughly 25,000 to 30,000 students appearing compared to over a lakh for IPMAT Indore. IIMK BMS-AT is also relatively new and competition is building gradually. But lower competition does not mean easier preparation, the core aptitude skills tested are the same across all these exams.
    A
No. CUET-UG is open to all streams. Programs in science, humanities, commerce, and interdisciplinary areas are all available. Subject selection within CUET depends on the program you are targeting, not your board stream.
    A
Yes. CLAT and all IPMAT and BMS programs are open to students from all streams. Eligibility is purely marks-based. The one exception is IIMB UGAT, which requires Mathematics as a subject in Class 12, regardless of stream.
    A
IPMAT leads directly to an IIM degree and is more focused on management. CUET opens access to a wider range of universities and programs. If management is certain and IIM cutoffs are within reach, IPMAT is the cleaner path. If keeping options open matters, CUET gives more flexibility.
