Direction Sense Problems Level-2

This module is designed for candidates aiming for high percentiles in exams like CAT, XAT, and Bank PO Mains. It requires the ability to translate descriptive movement into a geometric coordinate system.

• Syllabus & Core Question Types:

  • Shortest Distance (Pythagoras Theorem): Calculating the direct "as the crow flies" distance between the start and end points. This uses the formula: Distance^2 = Base^2 + Height^2.

  • Angular Displacements: Tracking movement based on degrees rather than just directions (e.g., "A man turns 45 degrees clockwise and then 135 degrees anti-clockwise").

  • Shadow-Based Problems: Determining orientation based on the position of the sun.

    • Morning: Sun is in the East; shadows fall toward the West.

    • Evening: Sun is in the West; shadows fall toward the East.

  • Clock-Based Directions: Finding the direction of the minute or hour hand at a specific time (e.g., "At 4:30, if the minute hand points South-West, in which direction does the hour hand point?").

  • Coded Directions: A modern exam favorite where directions are given in code (e.g., "A @ B means A is North of B").

• Exam Pattern & Strategy:

  • Total Questions: 50.

  • Ideal Time: 50–60 minutes.

  • Strategy: For Level 2, use a "dot and line" method on a grid. Pay close attention to the starting orientation—many questions begin with the person facing a specific direction before their first move.
